PLANT MITOCHONDRIAL DYNAMICS
Sourav Gangopadhyay MSc.
After completing my BSc.(Hons) in Botany at the University of Calcutta, India, I joined the same university to pursue my Masters of Science in Botany. Completion of my Masters degree helped me to join the same department as a research scholar, where I worked on biotechnology of jute plants (Corchorus sp.). During this time I learned plant tissue culture, biolistic and Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation and studies on effects of abiotic stress on crop plants in more depth.
In 2010 I came to Canada to start my Ph.D. in the dept. of Biology, University of Saskatchewan under the supervision of Dr. David C. Logan.
My research
My work in his lab aims to decipher the roles of different genes and proteins in the division of mitochondria in higher plant. As mitochondria are not synthesised de novo, division of mitochondria is necessary for proper distribution to the daughter cells. Any disruption in mitochondrial division can lead to aberrant mitochondrial morphology.
